Fritzie Brown: All Over the Map
March 16 - APRIL 7, 2024 / FOOTNOTE PROJECT SPACE
The exhibition Fritzie Brown: All Over the Map highlights the multimedia work of Fritzie Brown, created over the course of thirty years during her travels around the globe. Brown’s mixed media art, photographs and ephemera touch on themes of feminism, imperialism and domesticity, as they consider the after-effects of the Cold War.
Brown uses domestic objects, clothing and embroidery to anchor her work in the domestic realm, infusing it with the irony and melancholy of displacement. As director of the transnational arts organization CEC ArtsLink for twenty years, Brown traveled extensively in post-Soviet countries, giving her a global perspective that is reflected in her work.
Fritzie Brown has exhibited her work internationally, most recently at the Croatian National Museum of Modern Art in Zagreb. Her work is in the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Art and private collections. Brown studied sculpture at San Francisco State University and has a degree in Global Studies from City College of New York.
Brown was Program Director (1997 – 2008) and Executive Director (2008 – 2018) of CEC ArtsLink, a transnational cultural exchange organization that has enabled artists and cultural workers to experience dialog and collaboration across cultural and political boundaries for more than 60 years.
